Step One

Before We Meet

Once you've reached out through my contact form, I'll send you a short questionnaire by email to get to know you and your chess background. Here's what I'll ask:

  1. What is your name?

  2. What is your over-the-board rating? (USCF / FIDE)

  3. What is your Chess.com and/or Lichess username?

  4. How long have you been playing chess tournaments?

  5. What are your short-term and long-term goals in chess?

  6. What do you want or expect to get out of our lessons together?

Once you've answered the questionnaire and made payment for your first lesson, we'll schedule a day and time that works for both of us.

Step Two

What I Do Before the Lesson

"I do homework before you even show up."

Between the time we schedule the lesson and the day it happens, I'll be analyzing your recent games on my own time. Looking at your games helps me get an idea of your overall ability, your playing style, and a few specific areas where I think you can improve the most. This way, we hit the ground running from the very first session with no wasted time.

3
Step Three

During the Lesson

We'll meet online using Chess.com or Lichess, and communicate through Zoom. Each lesson lasts approximately one hour.

In our first session, we'll review some of your recent games together. I'll walk you through my observations, point out recurring patterns, both strengths to build on and weaknesses to address, and begin forming a plan for your improvement. I'll ask you lots of questions throughout the lesson because I want to understand how you think about positions, not just what moves you play.

Step Four

After the Lesson

At the end of our session, I'll send you an email with detailed notes from the lesson along with personalized homework tailored to the areas we identified. Future lessons will build on what we covered and continue to expand on your weak areas as your game develops. I periodically re-evaluate your strengths and weaknesses as you grow, so your training plan evolves with you.
